  3. BECAUSE there is safety in derision
  4. I talked about an apparition,
  5. I took no trouble to convince,
  6. Or seem plausible to a man of sense.
  7. Distrustful of thar popular eye
  8. Whether it be bold or sly.
  9. i{Fifteen apparitions have I seen;}
  10. i{The worst a coat upon a coat-hanger.}

  12. I have found nothing half so good
  13. As my long-planned half solitude,
  14. Where I can sit up half the night
  15. With some friend that has the wit
  16. Not to allow his looks to tell
  17. When I am unintelligible.

  22. Grows more deep day after day,
